Matthew Kane has been playing music all of his life.
Born in Cedar Rapids and raised in Roanoke, Virginia, he
moved back in 1990 to form a country band not confined
to only country music.
“Amarilla was my mom and dad’s
band and when someone couldn’t make it to a show for
bass or drums, I would fill in,” says Kane. “That
started from the time I was 14 and lasted until 1995. I
then played with Lane in ROUGHSTOCK but left it in 2002
to play in a classic rock band called Mackie Blue.
Taking what I had learned I started up Greenbrier. Lane
joined back up with me and in 2004 we hit the road.”
Named after his 1963 Chevy Corvair van, Greenbrier is
a country band with credentials, opening for such
country acts as Sugarland, Lone Star and Neal McCoy as
well as legendary performers like Charlie Daniels Band,
38 Special and Lynyrd Synyrd.
While only a quarter of the songs are originals at
this time, the band is working to add new pieces every
day.
“We pick cover songs that fit us,” explains Kane. “If
I can’t put my self in a song, if I can’t live it, I
don’t sing it. We are not just another bar band that
sings every beer drinking song out there. We push to
make sure that every minute of our show is fun. At
almost every show I have people come up and say that
they don’t like country music but they like what we do.
It makes me feel good when I know I’m doing it right.”
Work begun in April on a cd but for now, Kane is
contented to make and play music as long as there are
people wanting to hear it.
“It was my dream to some day play on stage as a lead
singer and bass player of my own band, just as my mom
and dad had done in their band back in the 70’s, 80’s
and 90’s,” he says. “Music is like church for people who
play from the heart.”
